Bonistics as a science and as a type of collecting emerges and begins to develop in the middle twentieth century. The turning point for it was the 70s, when bonistics was recognized as a separate branch of collecting.
But according to the history of Russia, this species has a much earlier origin. This is due to the appearance of the first banknotes in 1769. Bonistics began to develop most intensively in the 20s of the twentieth century, because at that time both banknotes of Tsarist Russia and the Provisional Government, Soviet power were in circulation, as well as issued by regional and local authorities of various regions and private companies.
Since the 1930s, the interest in bonistics has been declining, but in the 1980s, interest in this type of collecting reappeared in the USSR. Articles and publications began to be published in newspapers, and new modern catalogs appeared. Due to the crises of the 90s, the development of bonistics is again in decline; a large number of bons are exported abroad. But the 21st century shows us a revival of this type of collecting and an increase in the number of such collectors as bonists.
