The design of the first modern Ukrainian coins was approved in 1992, but they were put into circulation on September 2, 1996, when the hryvnia became the national currency.
During the time when karbovanets was in circulation, coins were not minted.
Ukrainian coins are minted by the National Bank of Ukraine, their denominations are 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50 kopecks and 1 hryvnia.
In addition, since 1995, the NBU has been issuing commemorative coins from precious and base metals, and investment coins from 999.9 fine gold and silver.
