The official currency of Taiwan is the Taiwan dollar. Coins have denominations of $½, $1, $5, $10, $20, $50. The Bank of Taiwan issued the New Taiwan Dollar on June 15, 1949 to replace the old Taiwan dollar. The exchange was carried out in a ratio of 40,000: 1. One of the reasons for the replacement was the fight against inflation, which began in the country after the civil war in China.
