To replace hryvnias and rubles, Peter I introduced machine minting of his own coins in 1701, after which each subsequent emperor considered it his duty to issue a coin with the image of his portrait. The coins of Tsarist Russia were distinguished by their high quality alloy even during periods when the state was on the verge of crisis.
