The beginning of metallic monetary circulation in Australia and Oceania is associated with the period of European colonization. The first coins of this region were improved piastres (Spanish dollars with the core knocked out).
Australian coins acquired their own design and independent status at the beginning of the 20th century, and since the 1960s, Australia abandoned the pro-English monetary system.
