The Czech Republic has been a member of the Universal Postal Union since 1993. The Czech Republic issued its first postage stamp on January 20, 1993. The miniature depicted the small coat of arms of the Czech Republic. The author of the sketch and engraver of the first Czech stamp was Josef Gerczyk. This was the first and only Czech miniature with a denomination in Czechoslovak crowns.
