A total of six self-governing Australian colonies, which created the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 January 1901, had their own postal services and issued their own postage stamps: New South Wales issued the first stamps in 1850), Victoria in 1850, Tasmania in 1853, Western Australia in 1854, South Australia in 1855 and Queensland in 1860.
