In the American colonies, postal communication began in the mid-17th century. In the 18th century, the Royal Post Office was founded, which operated under the supervision of a postmaster. In 1775, the post of Postmaster General of the United States was established, and postage stamps began to be used in the postal service in the early 1840s.
