Commemorative coins of the USSR are coins of the State Bank of the USSR, dedicated to memorable events, anniversaries of historical figures and cultural figures, as well as various buildings, monuments and animals. They were produced specifically for collectors in limited editions - this is the main distinguishing feature from regularly minted coins. In 1965, a one-ruble coin was issued, which was dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany. The circulation of this coin was 60 million copies. Coins were issued in honor of various anniversary events, such as, for example, the anniversary of the October Revolution, anniversaries of outstanding personalities - Lenin, Mendeleev, Pushkin and many others. The largest series of commemorative coins of the USSR was issued in honor of the 1980 Olympic Games.
Coins and bank sets were mainly produced from a copper-nickel alloy. But there were also commemorative coins made of gold, platinum, palladium and silver. Such coins were incredibly popular on the international numismatic market. Since 1987, commemorative coins in denominations of 3 and 5 rubles began to be minted.
