Despite the fact that the head of state is Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, represented by the Governor General, the currency of Papua New Guinea is the Kina. 1 kina is equal to 100 toea, coins in circulation are in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50 toea, 1 kina. The obverse of the coins features a bird of paradise sitting on an Aboriginal ceremonial spear and a drum used as an hourglass or the emblem of the Bank of Papua New Guinea.
