The main role in the internal and external markets of the Moldavian principality was played by foreign silver and gold coins: ducats, florins, zlotys and others. In the 17th century, the Dutch Löwendalder coin, on which a lion was depicted, entered the Balkans and Moldova. Residents of Moldova called these coins lei. In 1867, the currency of Romania received this name, and after the collapse of the USSR, the monetary unit of Moldova. Currently in circulation are coins in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 bani.
