The national currency of Malaysia is the ringgit. 1 ringgit is equal to 100 sen. The first issue of change coins, sen, was issued in 1967, in denominations of 1 sen, 5 sen, 10 sen, 20 sen, 50 sen, followed by 1 ringgit coins in 1971 (which continued to use the $ symbol). Varying widely in diameter, the coins were minted with similar obverse and reverse designs. The reverse featured the recently completed Malaysian Parliament House, the federal star and crescent taken from the canton of the Malaysian National Flag. All coins were minted from nickel alloy, only the 1 sen coin was made from bronze between 1967 and 1972, subsequent ones were made from copper in a steel shell. The 50 sen coin is the only coin in the series that has undergone a minor redesign - the letters “Bank Negara Malaysia” appeared on the edge in 1971. Minting of the first issue of sen was discontinued in 1989, when the second series was introduced into circulation. The coins nevertheless remained in circulation until 2008, but their numbers have steadily declined since the 1990s. The $1 coin was retired from circulation with the introduction of the second series of $1 coins in 1989.
