The Crimean Khanate was created in the 13th century after Batu Khan captured Kievan Rus and Crimea, their monetary system was destroyed and the need arose to create a new one. Under the Golden Horde in Crimea, coins were minted initially in the capital, and under Khan Shadibek in Caffa (modern Feodosia). Mostly the coins were silver. The Crimean Khanate began minting its own coins on behalf of the khans of the Girey dynasty.
