The official currency of Qatar is the rial, which appeared in 1973. Coins were minted: bronze in 1, 5, 10 dirhams, copper-nickel in 25, 50 dirhams. Since 2003, banknotes in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 rials have been in circulation, differing from the 1996 banknotes in new colors and a high degree of security.
