The Federal Republic of Germany existed from May 23, 1949 to October 3, 1990. During this period, the currency in use in the country was the German mark. 1 mark was equal to 100 pfenings. It was withdrawn from circulation after the transition to the euro in 2002. The following coins were in circulation: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 pfenings and 1, 2, 5 marks. They also issued commemorative and commemorative coins for collectors in denominations of 1, 2 and 5 marks. The German Democratic Republic or East Germany existed between October 7, 1949 and October 3, 1990. During this period, the currency in use in the country was the GDR mark. 1 mark was equal to 100 pfenings. The following coins were in circulation: 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 pfenings and 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 marks. Since 1966, commemorative coins have been issued in denominations of 5, 10 and 20 marks.
