The monetary unit of the Republic of The Gambia is the Gambian dalasi. 1 dalasi is equal to 100 bututs. In 1971, coins were introduced in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 bututs and 1 dalasi. The reverse designs of the three higher denomination coins follow the corresponding designs of the previous currency (1, 2 and 4 shillings), while the reverse designs of the three lower denominations repeat the corresponding designs of the 6, 1 and 3 pence coins. A new 1 dalasi coin was introduced in 1987, copying the British 50 pence coin. Only coins of 25, 50 bututs and 1 dalasi remain in circulation today, although new coins in denominations of 1, 5 and 10 bututs were issued in 1998.
