New coin sizes appeared precisely during the reign of Alexander I. In 1810, a new monetary reform was led by the Emperor’s advisor, Mikhail Speransky. For the first time in Russian history, the reform tied all monetary denominations to the ruble. Thanks to this, the ruble became the official currency of Russia. The value of copper coins was given in accordance with the banknote exchange rate. This finally made it possible to reduce their mass, which the predecessors of Alexander I had been trying to do for so long.
