During the reign of Catherine I, quite interesting coins were issued. For example, on a silver ruble issued in 1727, an eagle with a magpie’s tail is depicted on the obverse. This can be seen in the photos of many catalogs around the world. The coins, despite their attractiveness, still had a number of disadvantages, such as their heavy weight and the fact that rare, expensive metals had to be used to make them. Therefore, in the 40s, Prosecutor General Prince Ya. P. Shakhovsky had the idea to remove heavy five-kopeck coins from circulation and replace them with paper coupons, which he called “zettels” (from the German word “label”). But this proposal was rejected by the Senate.
