Coins of the pre-Petrine period in Tsarist Russia begin their existence in 1380, after the Battle of Kulikovo. The first to be minted were the so-called wire coins. The formation of Tsarist Russia (the acquisition of gradual independence from the Golden Horde, fragmentation) led to the emergence of new legends that began to be depicted on coins. Each specific principality minted its own coins (they differed in design and especially in weight).
The reform of Elena Glinskaya in 1535 approved the following coins: “kopeck”, “denga”, “half quarter”.
Before Peter I, coins were changed in weight and cut by counterfeiters, and melting of coins also became popular.
