Saint Lucia began issuing postage stamps in 1860, selecting designs in accordance with prevailing colonial policies, until it achieved associate status in 1967, followed by full independence in 1979. In 1983, the state's philatelic policy became more liberal, although there were attempts to maintain uniformity of stamps, maintaining their relative loyalty to domestic interests.
