The Republic of Costa Rica has been a member of the Universal Postal Union since 1883. Costa Rica has issued its own postage stamps since 1862. The very first issue of postage stamps was printed by the American Bank Note Company. They are known in philatelic parlance as "Reals" because their denomination was expressed in Costa Rican reals as well as pesos. The series consisted of four stamps of different colors.
