On January 1, 1863, Turkey issued its first adhesive stamps, becoming the second independent country in Asia to have gummed stamps. In this regard, it was ahead only of Russia in 1858, as well as two British colonies - India in 1854 and Ceylon in 1857. Turkish stamps appeared less than two years after postage stamps began circulating in neighboring Greece, a former Turkish possession and an independent state since 1832.
