The Republic has been a member of the Universal Postal Union since 1915. On March 2, 1877, a new treaty was signed between Italy and San Marino, which gave the republic the opportunity to print its own stamps. The first postage stamps of San Marino were issued on August 1, 1877. These were standard stamps with two designs and five denominations. All miniatures (except for the 2 centesimo stamp) depicted the coat of arms of the republic - the three towers of San Marino on Mount Monte Titano. The stamps were designed by the design firm of the Pellas brothers in Genoa. They were printed on watermarked paper at the Officina Carta e Valori printing house in Turin. In April 1890, two postal miniatures were issued to complete the series.
