The history of mail and postage stamps of Bosnia and Herzegovina is divided into the following periods: Ottoman, Yugoslav states and modern independent confederal state.
The first postage stamps on the territory of present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina appeared in the summer of 1879. The Austro-Hungarian occupation led to the publication of special postage stamps in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1, 1879. The first postage stamp with the image of a double-headed eagle, the coat of arms of Austria-Hungary, was gray in color and has several varieties. The denomination of the stamp was one kreuzer.
