Two-color postage stamps appeared early in the republic, among them the 1939 series, issued on the occasion of the New York World's Fair, stands out. One of her postage stamps depicted the exhibition's famous Trylon and Perisphere pavilions, along with the lighthouse that was designed and planned to be built by 1942, the 450th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the New World. Like other Latin American countries, the Dominican Republic often issued additional revenue stamps to raise funds for public services. After the fall of the Trujillo regime in 1961, stamps became more themed.
