Bolivia has been a member of the Universal Postal Union since 1886. The first Bolivian postage stamps were issued in 1867. This was a series of stamps called “Condor” - after the image of a condor placed on the stamps. From 1870 to 1893, fiscal stamps were also in circulation as postage stamps. In 1909, the country's first commemorative stamps were issued, dedicated to the centenary of the beginning of the Bolivian War of Independence.
