In 1866, the colony issued its own postage stamps. The design was a profile of Queen Victoria, typical of British postage stamps of the time, with an oval band with the text "BRITISH HONDURAS" and the denomination. The very first stamps included denominations of 1 penny, 6 pence and 1 shilling. This design continued to be used until the 1891 issue of Colonial stamps, with occasional changes to the watermarks and perforations.
