The first Mongolian postage stamps appeared in 1924, with the proclamation of the Mongolian People's Republic. They were printed in Shanghai, although foreign catalogs indicate Moscow. The series included postal miniatures in seven denominations, from 1 cent to 1 dollar, each of which featured the Buddhist symbol eldev-ochir (crossed vajra). There are also known examples with perforations across the stamp, but these were officially put on sale only for collection purposes. In 1926, overprinted fiscal stamps of the second postal issue entered postal circulation. Overprints of three colors (purple, black and red) contained inscriptions in English (“Postage” - “Postage”) and Mongolian.
