Palau introduced its own postage stamps in March 1983. The country has pursued a more diversified policy from the very beginning. Standard series devoted to marine flora and fauna, flowers, birds and insects were published in a row. A popular tourist destination for Japanese people coming to visit the graves of those killed in the war, Palau has dedicated several issues to its ties to Japan. The Republic's relationship with the United States spawned postage stamps featuring Ronald Reagan and postage commemorating Operation Desert Storm. Many sheets vividly illustrate each phase of the war in the Pacific theater of World War II, particularly the Battle of Peleliu in 1944. In honor of the tenth anniversary of the Republic, a self-adhesive stamp was issued, carved in the shape of a ridge on the roof of the bai (national meeting house).
