The island of Nauru was part of the Marshall Islands, but after its occupation by Australian troops in November 1914, it came under a British mandate. It was transferred to Australia in 1924 and became an independent republic in 1968. From 1906 to 1980, the New Hebrides were jointly administered by Great Britain and France. The condominium then became the Republic of Vanuatu and was admitted to membership of the Commonwealth of Nations. After the Australian occupation in 1914, stamps overprinted for the North-West Pacific Islands were used, but when British control took over in 1916, English postage stamps overprinted "Nauru" came into circulation. After Australia received a mandate to govern the island in 1924, miniatures of the freighter Century were produced and used until 1954, when another art series was released. In 1963-1965, a photo-engraved series appeared, which was overprinted in 1968 due to the fact that Nauru became a republic within the Commonwealth of Nations. Since then, stamps have been issued very discreetly. All of them are related to the history and modernity of the island.
