Kiribati has been a member of the Universal Postal Union since 1984 and has issued its own postage stamps since 1979. The first postage stamps of sovereign Kiribati were two stamps issued on November 19, 1979 to commemorate the independence of this state, which indicated the new name of the country. In the same year, the first Kiribati postal block appeared.
