Ugandan cowries, or Ugandan missionaries, are Uganda's first postage stamps. Printed on a typewriter, had an adhesive layer and perforations. The stamps had different denominations, but they were all quoted in cowries (shell money), at a rate of 200 cowries per rupee or 12½ cowries = 1 penny. The design of the stamps is simple: the initial letters of the phrase “Uganda Government” and the denomination number. The stamps were printed on very thin paper. Counterfeits of these brands are known.
