Tunisia maintains a moderate philatelic policy, issuing on average about 30 postage stamps per year. For the most part, these are single stamps dedicated to topics of national and global importance. Their symbolic and allegorical motifs are a manifestation of the deep influence of Hatem Elmekki. From time to time, portraits of famous Tunisians, including women (for example, singer Saliha), appear on postage signs, which is quite unusual for Muslim countries. Since 1997, small series with reproductions of paintings by local artists have been published. The thematic approach is represented by just a few issues of three or four stamps featuring images of horses, reptiles, shells, musical instruments and ancient ruins.
