The history of mail and postage stamps in Tanzania includes three periods - colonial, Tanganyika and modern Tanzania. Postage stamps were issued on the territory of this country in accordance with each of these periods. Tanzania's first stamp issue was a series of four unification commemorative stamps issued on July 7, 1964. The stamps bear the inscription “UNITED REPUBLIC OF TANGANYIKA & ZANZIBAR” (“United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar”). Two of the stamps in the series show a map of the coast from Tanga to Dar es Salaam, along with the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba, and the other two feature an image of hands clutching a torch and a spear. The first issue of standard stamps took place on December 9, 1965. The series included 14 stamps in denominations ranging from 5 cents to 20 shillings, depicting different types of country, symbols and wild animals.
