Sierra Leone introduced its own stamps in 1859, the first of the West African countries. Until 1932, their subjects were limited to royal portraits, then artistic standard postage marks appeared. From then until independence in 1961, metallography was used. Postage stamps issued since then are generally colorful and interesting, but rarely say anything about the country itself.
