The Seychelles was a former dependent territory of Mauritius and used its Mauritius postage stamps, which could only be distinguished by their cancellations, and introduced its own postage stamps in 1890. Many of the issues released since independence in 1975 feature wildlife on the islands, a major draw for tourists. From 1980 to 1992, the Outer Seychelles Islands, several islands far from the Seychelles core, had their own stamps. At that time, they were served by a ship that served as a floating post office. Then three different forms of their name were tried, taken from three local dialects.
