The first postage stamp of Burundi appeared in 1916 after the Belgian occupation of German East Africa and was an overprint of the inscription “Urundi” on postage stamps of the Belgian Congo.
Following the First World War, the country became part of the Belgian mandate territory of Ruanda-Urundi, and until 1962 the latter's postage stamps were used there.
