The Federation issued the first postage stamps in 1954. These were postal miniatures with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in three types of drawings with the inscription English. "RHODESIA & NYASALAND". Initially, on July 1, 15 stamps were issued in denominations ranging from half a penny to 1 pound sterling. On 15 February 1956 another 2½d stamp was issued for the new domestic mail postage rate.
