Madagascar's postal and stamp history spans from 1889 to the present, including when the Indian Ocean island nation off the southeast coast of Africa was known as the Malagasy Republic. For postal services in Madagascar, British Postal stamps and French colonial issues were used at various times. The country became independent on June 26, 1960 and began issuing its own postage stamps. Madagascar joined the Universal Postal Union in 1961.
