The first stamps of this country are known as “Cameos”. They are embossed with the profile of Queen Victoria. Since 1920, art stamps have been produced using intaglio printing in a subdued two-color palette that was fashionable until the end of World War II. They were replaced by multi-color photo-engraving and single-subject standard editions. Since gaining independence, The Gambia has become a popular tourist destination. It achieved autonomy in 1963, independence in 1965 and became a republic within the Commonwealth in 1970.
