Before Botswana gained independence, stamps from the Bechuanaland Protectorate were in circulation in that country. Botswana has issued postage stamps for national use since independence on 30 September 1966. The first post-independence issue in 1966 included images of the Lobatse abattoir, Botswana's national airline and the government building in Gaborone.
