The sketches of the banknotes were considered by the Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada, chaired by the first President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk, who approved the sketches prepared by V. Lopata. Since 1992, temporary banknotes called coupons and denominated in rubles (Ukrainian karbovanets) were put into circulation. Officially they were called Karbovantsy, popularly they were called Kuno-Karbovantsy. And the new currency “hryvnia” was printed in France, Canada and Italy, which was introduced as a monetary unit on September 2, 1996.
