In the summer of 1917, Mikhail Grushevsky announced a competition for the best sketches of Ukrainian paper money. Such famous artists as G. Narbut, A. Sereda, G. Zolotov, O. Krasovsky, M. Romanovsky took part in it. At the same time, a trident with a cross, an image of a Cossack with a musket, and even a swastika were proposed as the coat of arms of Ukraine. The artist Georgy Narbut, studying ancient coins, chose a trident with a cross. It was he who was depicted on the first Ukrainian paper money.
