The earliest use of paper money is recorded in China around 800 AD, although the Chinese stopped using it in the mid-15th century. The Chinese Kuan banknote is the oldest known banknote in the world, dating back to approximately 1380.
In many Asian countries, the Second World War led to the issuance of a new temporary currency for the period of occupation. The ten military yen note was issued in 1941 during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong.
